A climbing rose in partial shade...

Here are some sites where I found some info on roses and shade.

Of course, the David Austin roses are spectacular. I just want to be sure that if I spend the money - and roses are not cheap - that it will grow in that spot out back where the climbing hydrangea was wreaking havoc on the fence. I am feeling somewhat doubtful that a rose will thrive there. I found a sun calculator on Amazon for around $13 so that may well be my first step.
I need to be sure that the rose will receive a minimum of 4 hours a day of sunshine. And I also found a site that suggested that the lighter colour the rose, the less sunshine it needs. Ok. That works for me.
I think that it was Paul Zimmerman who also said that dappled sunshine is fine, not deep shade though.
Maybe I should plant it in a pot first and see how it does. That might be the solution.

Moved a climbing hydrangea...

The other day, I moved a climbing hydrangea. I have been recovering ever since!
I am not terribly enthusiastic about the plant....it is a wee bit understated and boring. Mostly it just made me nervous. Why? Because it was pulling down the neighbours' fence. Those vines are brutal! Only plant it where it is climbing concrete or an ugly handrail. Ha...I have both at the front of my yard. Such an ugly ugly handrail. So I moved it there.

It was a challenge. I dug...and took a break....dug....break. Lots of breaks. Finally my poor brother wandered out and I grabbed him to finish up the beastly job. So easy for him. Arg. That is frustrating.
I planted in a pot that I bought at https://www.gardenworks.ca for 50% off! How great is that? Actually, I bought 4 pots in total. The other 3 predestined to hold roses as I am obsessed with roses this year. Anyways...
In the now empty spot of my garden, I plan to plant a climbing rose! See the picture below. The vine is gone but check out the vines left on the fence.
The only problem is that it is quite shady back there. I have started to research and will do another post with that information. I wonder if you can buy a sun meter to measure the amount of sunshine that a given spot receives? hmmm.....

August 2014 #2

From season to season I forget what the garden looks like. I have to admit that I love every season but when I see these pictures, I am totally beside myself. This is why I love to garden. Stunning beauty.
